Cailleach
Cailleach
The Cailleach of Celtic mythology is the divine hag, the goddess of wilderness and weather, especially storms and winter. The owl is often associated with the crone form of the goddess, particularly in her role as guide through the underworld – wise and insightful, clever and capable, keen seer through darkness.
As women reach the second half of life, our culture is determined to cast us aside. Dismissed, silenced, made invisible. But our ancestors around the world knew and know better, and their myths are the truths that remind us. We will not quietly disappear.
This work is part of my ‘Repurposed’ series, in which I have utilized used canvases and artist panels discarded by another artist as my starting surface to create new original works. Giving new life to discarded items is a core theme of much of my artwork, reflecting my pursuit of living sustainably to be as good of a steward of the earth as I can.
