Beauty In The Cracks Of Sidewalks
Beauty In The Cracks Of Sidewalks
This piece is inspired by the resilience and perseverance of the hearty and hardy growing things that flourish even in the most challenging places, reminding us to look for beauty everywhere. The flowers are strips from a city map featuring the industrial area of the city, altered with acrylic paint, then shaped and sculpted by hand, with subtle highlights of bronze acrylic. Vines are hemp cord highlighted with bronze acrylic, representing the weave between the natural and industrial world. The background is several mixed media layers, distressed at each step to push new layers backward and bring old layers forward. This process and result is meant to symbolize both the constancy of change and the beauty that can be found in the decay and weathering of man-made materials acted upon by Nature.
This work is part of my “Repurposed” series, in which I have utilized used canvases and artist panels discarded by another artist as my starting surface to create new original works. Giving new life to discarded items is a core theme of much of my artwork, reflecting my pursuit of living sustainably to be as good of a steward of the earth as I can.
